This book is about
A boy called Dickon gets on a ship (The Pelican) at Plymouth Docks and hides on it. He wants to be a cabin boy, but his friend, Tib, was chosen for the job. Francis Drake, (the captain) finds him hiding on the ship and allows him to be a cabin boy. The ship travels to the Indies. It is re-named the Golden Hinde and painted in red and gold. There is a storm. The ship arrives in Peru and the crew invade a Spanish ship to get gold. Then they sail north and arrive in North America. The captain tries to catch an ostrich and does not realise that an Indian is firing an arrow at him. Dickon saves his life and is given a gold ducat. After traveling around the world, they return to England and Queen Elizabeth I makes the captain, Sir Francis Drake.

The main characters are
Dickon and Sir Francis Drake.
