Reading scavenger hunt

Reading scavenger hunt

Set a hunt challenge before you start reading: find a word with sh, spot an exclamation mark, count how many times a character's name appears. Keeps attention sharp.

Word Games Ages 4-9 Medium energy 10-30 mins

Goal

Add a game-like focus to reading — spotting sounds, punctuation or patterns gives children a reason to look carefully at every word on the page.

How to do it

Before you open the book, set one or two "hunt" goals. Choose from things like: "Find a word with sh", "Spot an exclamation mark", "Find a question", or "Count how many times the character's name appears".

Read together as normal — but now there's something extra to look for. When they find it, they call it out. You can use the digraph flashcards to remind them which sounds they're hunting.

The hunt focus shifts attention from just getting through the words to really looking at the page. Which is, quietly, the whole point of reading carefully.
