- A finished book to discuss
How to do it
When your child has finished a book, ask: "What if the ending had been different?" Could the character have made another choice? What might have happened next? Use our reading prompt questions and cards to spark ideas — they're full of prompts that work brilliantly for "what if" conversations.
Your child might want to draw the new ending, tell it aloud, or write a few sentences. Keep it low-pressure. The point is to think about cause and effect, character motivation and how one change ripples through a story. It's comprehension in disguise — and it's fun.
