Two truths one guess

Two truths one guess

Share two true things from the book and one you made up. Your child guesses the fake. Low-pressure comprehension that feels like a trick question.

Goal

Check understanding of a story in a playful way — without it feeling like a test.

You'll need

  • A book you've just read together

How to do it

After reading, share three statements about the story: two true, one made up. For example: "The bear found honey. The rabbit wore a hat. The fox went to sleep." Your child guesses which one you invented.

Then swap — they come up with two truths and one made-up statement, and you have to guess. You can play it wrong on purpose occasionally. Children love catching you out.

This is one of those activities that does real comprehension work without any of the pressure of "did you understand this?". They're thinking carefully about what actually happened in the story — which is exactly what you want.
