Reading Levels & Book Bands

Choosing the right book band helps your child build confidence and progress at just the right pace. This section explains how reading levels work, when to move up or down, and what to expect as your child grows into a fluent, enthusiastic reader.

How do I change my book band?

Just head to your account page, then click “Manage Book List” for the child you’d like to update the book band for.

Look for the heading titled “Change Book Band”, and choose the new colour you’d like to move to. This will reset your list of upcoming books, but it will keep your favourites and your other book preferences.

We’ll also generate a certificate that you can print off and give to your child to celebrate!

If you have favourites set up for your previous book band, these won’t be removed by default. Be sure to “unfavourite” those books if you’d no longer like to be sent them, and would prefer to move entirely to the new band straight away.

I’ve changed my child’s book band, but I’m still receiving books from their previous one?

This will most likely be because there are still books marked as a “Favourite” in your account from their previous book band. If you remove these from your favourites list, you’ll be all set.

We don’t remove these by default when changing bands, because some parents like to mix-and-match books across different book bands (either to try a more challenging book, or to pick books that match up well with their child’s interests).

What reading level or book band should I start with?

We have a helpful guide that should explain everything you need to know about book bands, along with an interactive tool to see what each band looks like (with sample pages from our books).

The best place to start is by taking a look at your child’s most recent book from school. It usually (but not always!) will have a book band or colour associated with it, that will correspond to the same colour on Reading Chest.

A rough guide by age would be as follows, but remember that every child is different, and everyone progresses at different stages!

  • Ages 4-5: Pink, Red, Yellow
  • Ages 5-6: Blue, Green, Orange
  • Ages 6-7: Turquoise, Purple, Gold, White, Lime
  • Ages 7-9: Extended
