Same sound, different spelling.

Our alternative spellings flashcards help children recognise that one sound can be written in more than one way — like ai, a-e, and ay, or ee, ea, and e-e. These cards focus on common alternative graphemes so children can start spotting patterns across different words.

These cards are especially useful for:

• Building flexibility when decoding unfamiliar words
• Reinforcing that sounds can be represented in multiple ways
• Supporting spelling once children begin writing independently

Try picking one sound and exploring all the ways it can be written. Say the sound together, read example words in books, and notice which spelling is being used. Over time, this awareness makes both reading and spelling feel far less mysterious.
