Intermediate Book Review
A thoughtful next step for growing readers to explore books in a bit more depth.
Our intermediate book review template is designed for children who are reading more confidently and are ready to share fuller ideas about what they’ve read. It encourages clear thinking and simple written responses, without tipping into anything that feels overwhelming.
Children are prompted to:
- Record key details like the book title, date, and a star rating
- Summarise the plot in their own words
- Think about the main characters and choose a favourite
- Describe the setting and where the story takes place
- Say whether they’d recommend the book — and explain why
- Get creative by designing their own book cover
It’s a great way to build comprehension, organise thoughts, and practise expressing opinions — all while keeping reading enjoyable and pressure-free.
Ideal for children who’ve moved beyond first book reviews and are ready to reflect a little more deeply on stories they enjoy.

The reading relay
Take turns reading a sentence or page each — you share the load, keep the momentum, and finish the book together. A proper team effort.
Start a mini book club
Read the same book as a friend or sibling, then sit down with a review sheet and chat about it. A book club that actually fits into real life.
Bonfire Night book review
Find a fireworks story, read it together, colour the sheet, then chat about it over a simple book review. Seasonal reading with a bit of reflection built in.
