Short Vowel Sounds Flashcards
Back to the basics (the important ones).
Our short vowel sounds flashcards focus on the five core vowel sounds: a as in cat, e as in bed, i as in sit, o as in dog, and u as in cup. These are the sounds children meet again and again in early reading, so confidence here makes everything else feel easier.
These cards are especially useful for:
- Strengthening sound recognition in simple CVC words
- Helping children hear the vowel sound in the middle of a word
- Practising blending and segmenting for early spelling
- Playing quick “change the vowel” games (cat, cot, cut…)
Keep it short and snappy — say the sound, read a word together, and swap the middle vowel to make a new one. Mastering short vowels is a small step that unlocks a surprising amount of reading power.
