Phonics Screening Words List

Eighty words drawn from official past Phonics Screening Check papers — exactly the kind of practice that counts.

This Year 1 Phonics Screening practice list gives children a chance to read through real words and pseudo-words (alien words) in the same format they’ll meet in the actual check. The words are taken from past papers, so they reflect the genuine range and difficulty of what children can expect. Alien characters sit alongside the pseudo-words as a visual cue, just like in the real booklet.

It’s especially helpful for:

• Getting comfortable with pseudo-words before the check takes place
• Practising blending across a wide range of phonics patterns
• Building fluency and confidence with unfamiliar words
• Short, focused practice sessions in the run-up to June
